Vietnam: Will VAT refunds attract more tourist?

According to Tax News the Vietnamese Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is requesting the Government to provide significant tax breaks for the country’s tourist sector in order to restore its international competitiveness.

The question is: Is an extension of the VAT refund or an enhancement of destination appeal more likely to encourage tourist arrivals?

To support tourist spending in Vietnam, the Ministry is also reported to be supporting an extension to the VAT refund pilot scheme for foreign visitors when it expires at the end of June next year.

The Government introduced the scheme in July 2012 to refund the VAT on goods purchased by overseas tourists departing through Noi Bai International Airport and Tan Son Nhat International Airport, which serve Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, respectively.
