The Vietnam Airlines Corporation is planning to expand Cam Ranh International Airport as the increasing popularity of the resort town of Nha Trang has nearly overloaded the airport.

Under the expansion project estimated at some VND4.5 trillion (US$211 million), the airport will get the second runway and a new terminal to increase its capacity to 2.6 million passengers per year, the Saigon Times website reported on Wednesday

Last year about 1.5 million passengers arrived at Cam Ranh Airport, which was designed to receive 1.6 million passengers per year, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.
The existing runway was built by the US army more than 40 years ago, during the Vietnam War, and can accommodate aircraft as large as the Airbus A321 and Boeing B737.

Under the expansion plan, the airport is expected to be able to receive various aircraft like ATR72, Airbus A320, A321, Boeing B767-300, B777, and B747 as of 2020.

The report said the Ministry of Transport has ordered the corporation to make an investment plan which will be either public-private partnership with foreign investors, or build-operate-transfer, for the project.

Last year US-based ADC-HAS Airport, a joint venture between Canada’s Airport Development Corporation and the US’s Houston Airport System, met with the ministry to discuss cooperation in expanding Cam Ranh.

The joint venture then announced that it was drafting a detailed plan to expand the airport and would submit it to the Vietnamese aviation authority.

ADC-HAS said it had received approval from the Overseas Private Investment Corporation, a US government development finance institution, for the project and the latter had pledged credit of up to $250 million.
