Sri Lanka develops Passekudaah Bay on its eastern coastline

According to this BBC new clips after a decades-long civil war the Sri Lankan government is aiming to develop its tourism industry on its eastern coastline. One of the new resorts coming up is the Centara Passikudah Resort & Spa.

Traditionally coastal tourism development has been on the country’s western shore. See here for resort development locations in Sri Lanka.

The government has designated Passekudah Bay as a special tourism development zone and has allocated leases for luxury hotels to build 800 hotel rooms as part of a drive to bring 2.5 million tourists by 2016.

But as BBC’s Charles Haviland reports, some critics say the development is happening too fast.
